STAFF BIOS

Ashley Dickson (Production Editor) earned bachelor’s degrees in broadcast journalism and home and family living at Brigham Young University and is currently obtaining a master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College in Boston. Ashley works as an editor for a financial research firm and a freelance writer for a number of national magazine titles.

Justine Dorton (Managing Editor) built a career in event and convention planning and worked in public relations for a local Chamber of Commerce before beginning her family. She has been writing and publishing short works for 25 years, and serves as CFO of The Segullah Group, Inc. She lives in Utah with her husband and five children.

Lisa Meadows Garfield (Poetry Editor) is an award-winning poet and author of For Love of a Child: Stories of Adoption. She served on the board of the Oregon State Poetry Association for several years and has taught classes ranging from preschool to college, from music to conscious living. Lisa has a BA in humanities, two masters degrees in education, six children, and seven grandchildren.

Angela Hallstrom (Fiction Editor, Assistant Features Editor) is the author of the novel Bound on Earth and the editor of the short story collection Dispensation: Latter-Day Fiction. Her work has received awards from the Utah Council, the Association for Mormon Letters, and the Whitney Academy, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Hamline University and enjoys teaching writing to college students. She lives with her husband and four children in Woodbury, Minnesota.

Melissa McQuarrie (Prose Editor) has a BA and an MA in English from Brigham Young University, where she tutored in the writing center, taught freshman composition, and edited for Inscape and BYU Studies. She has published creative nonfiction in Inscape, Dialogue, and, in 2011, Irreantum. As well as editing for Segullah, she works as a copyeditor for the Mormon Women Project. She lives in Provo, Utah with her husband and four children.

Shelah Mastny Miner (Features Editor) has a BA in English Teaching from Brigham Young University, an MA in American Culture Studies from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently working on an MFA in Creative Writing at BYU. She writes for Feminist Mormon Housewives and the Mormon Women Project and keeps a book review blog at Shelah Books It. She lives in Salt Lake City with her husband and four children.

Adri Murdock (Assistant Art Director) holds a BA in Art History and Curatorial Studies from Brigham Young University.   Before leaving to stay home full-time, Adri worked on development and marketing for the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville, Kentucky.  She has enjoyed being a part of theSegullah art board since 2007.  Other interests include reading, writing, travel, photography and hiking in the beautiful Colorado Rockies, where she lives with her husband and four children.

Lara Niedermeyer (Assistant Poetry Editor)  joined Segullah’s staff in 2009 after winning first place in their poetry contest. She writes both poetry and fiction and currently leads a local writing critique group. Recently, she taught a poetry workshop at the ANWA Northwest Writers Retreat. She lives in Bellingham, Washington with her husband and two children.

Maralise Petersen (Art Editor) has lived and worked on both coasts and in Europe but calls the American West home. She graduated from BYU in Humanities and History, has done graduate work at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Vienna, and works as a freelance and fine art photographer.  Her work has been featured at the Amerikahaus in Vienna, Austria; the ‘Women of Faith’ exhibit in Washington D.C.; and in the literary journal Irreantum.

Cheri Schulzke (Assistant Prose Editor) graduated from BYU with a BA in music and an MA in English. At BYU, she taught freshman composition and tutored for several years in the writing center. Later she taught creative writing—from poetry and plays to personal essays—at a private elementary school. She currently homeschools two of her four children, who all share a home with her, her husband, three cats, and three rats in Pleasant Grove, UT.

Kathryn Lynard Soper (Executive Editor) is the founder of Segullah and the author of the memoirThe Year My Son and I Were Born: A Story of Down Syndrome, Motherhood, and Self-Discovery (Globe Pequot Press, 2009). She has edited four published anthologies, the most recent titled Dance With Them: 30 Stumbling Mothers Share Glimpses of Grace (Segullah Books, 2010). Melissa Young (Associate Editor) graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University with a BA in communication studies and a minor in music. She has served on the editorial staff of Segullah since 2005. In addition to working as a freelance editor, Melissa enjoys volunteering at her childrens’ school, teaching piano, and writing creative non-fiction.
